Cosy014:
01. I talk to you 5/5. 4/5. Blackberry Wine is a spin off project from The Local Heroes who released one of my Top 25 singles for 2007, Years We Lost and Days We Found. With a massive line up consisting of just Rachel from the Heroes, her side project is an intimate affair that is soothingly twee and hauntingly good. Put together with love and attention to detail, The Look-Back Time is an absolutely adorable release that will warm your heart with its profoundly moving folky chamber pop, hand decorated covers, and photos from a bygone era. Sounding achingly sweet like Isobel Campbell or Tracyanne Campbell at their best, Rachel has such a touchingly soft voice that it sounds as if she’s whispering directly into your ear throughout the seven songs on this disc. The Look-Back Time is delightfully, subdued pop that’s barely there but is oh so good. It’s a cozy affectionate record that you can’t help but want to spend time with. It’s a bit shy and a bit timid but it wants to be heard and when it drifts your way, you can’t help but be stirred by it’s quiet meanderings. Like all the best quiet bits from a stack of Sarah Records, Blackberry Wine’s The Look-Back Time is a tender and fragile thing. It’s muted beats, gently strummed guitars, and strings will haunt your heart and touch your soul. From the intriguingly titled, “False Teeth”, to the swirling tranquility of, “Morning Breaks Me”, The Look-Back Time does what pop music is supposed to do; move you. It’s just that it goes about it in a very leisurely way and subdued way. The Look-Back Time is probably the best twee record you’ll hear all year and thus you need this in your life. “Star shone” |
